What is Moosejaw?
Moosejaw is our annual music and dance weekend! Every March (barring the pandemic), we gather community for workshops, dances, jamming, and fun. We traditionally have hosted the weekend up at the amazing Maplelag resort in Callaway, MN, but have had to find a new home this year due to the devastating fire at the Maplelag lodge this past fall. Our hearts are with the resort owners and staff. However, we didn’t want to spend another year without Moosejaw! This year Moosejaw will be hosted at Camp St. Croix, located just across the river from the Twin Cities in Hudson, WI! Registration to Moosejaw can include lodging and meals; different tiers and options are available. Thanks to the new location and its’ proximity, we are also providing the option of day passes this year, for folks who want to join in the fun without staying the night. While the emphasis of the weekend is on old-time music and dance, we always like to mix it up! In addition to a great old-time band and experienced caller, every year a second band performs for evening social dances and we offer related workshops. In the past we’ve offered workshops in Swing, Cajun, Zydeco, and Scandinavian dancing. This year, we have the amazing Steam Machine and caller Sue Hulsether bringing the old-time sounds and squares, and Miss Myra & The Moonshiners coming in hot with some New Orleans style jazz and swing. Get your dancing shoes ready!

Steam Machine – Steam Machine is a midwest based bluegrass accompanied old time music project. Originally formed in Minneapolis in 2017, Steam Machine brought to the national stage a midwest influence string band aesthetic that didn’t draw such hard lines between bluegrass and old time music. Equally at home playing for an old time/bluegrass loving crowd or listeners new to these sounds, Steam Machine aspires to keep midwest style old time bluegrass music alive and well wherever they go! Fronted by award-winning fiddler AJ Srubas and old time music and dance instigator Rina Rossi, they will be joined for Moosejaw by fellow midwest old time powerhouses Sam Bartlett on banjo and Abby Ladin on bass.
Miss Myra & The Moonshiners – Miss Myra & The Moonshiners are a formidable 5-piece swing band based in Minneapolis, MN. They bring a fresh female-driven perspective to traditional New Orleans and hot club jazz, playing a repertoire of classic tunes from the ’20s and ’30s and inspired originals. With powerful vocals, a smoking horn section, and sweet rhythm, they are guaranteed to lift spirits and fill the dance floor!
