What is Moosejaw?
Moosejaw is our annual music and dance weekend! Every March (barring the pandemic), we gather community for workshops, dances, jamming, and fun. This year Moosejaw will be hosted at Camp St. Croix, located just across the river from the Twin Cities in Hudson, WI! Registration to Moosejaw can include lodging and meals; different tiers and options are available. Thanks to the new location and its’ proximity, we are also providing the option of day passes this year, for folks who want to join in the fun without staying the night. Check out the registration form linked above for more info!
While the emphasis of the weekend is on old-time music and dance, we always like to mix it up! In addition to a great old-time band and experienced caller, every year a second band performs for evening social dances and we offer related workshops. In the past we’ve offered workshops in Swing, Cajun, Zydeco, and Scandinavian dancing. This year, we have the amazing Ashlee Watkins & Andrew Small and the Como Mountain Critters and caller Tamara Loewenthal bringing the old-time sounds and squares, and Honky-Tonk Jump delivering Texas dance hall honky tonk. Get your dancing shoes ready!
More about the bands!
Ashlee Watkins & Andrew Small and the Como Mountain Critters – Ashlee Watkins and Andrew Sharp are an old-time duo based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia. Award winning songwriters, they have been featured on the PBS show Song of the Mountains, and their string band has won awards at fiddlers conventions throughout the region.
Honky-Tonk Jump – Honky-Tonk Jump plays swingin’ Texas dance hall music in the tradition of Bob Wills, Milton Brown, Ernest Tubb and Spade Cooley with a sprinkling of Hank Williams and other early honky-tonk legends. This band rustles up a rhythm roundup with accordion, twin fiddles, guitar, pedal steel, mandolin, bass, drums and vocals. Their music features signature twin and triple leads on accordion, fiddle, pedal steel and guitar with soulful vocals, all backed by a hard-swingin’ rhythm section.
